The year that was...........triathlon season that is......

2012 was about a lot of firsts and achievements. I completed my first half marathon (Race your pace, Dorney Lake) and as much as it hurt I did it. I then decided that I would do another half marathon (Silvertsone Half Marathon). After accomplishing my half marathon goal I decided that for triathlon no more sprint distances, it was time to increase the distance after 5 years.

So I entered 3 Olympic distances (Marlow, Worthing, Vacheray) and set my 'A' race for the year 'Mauritius Indian Ocean Triathlon'.

I really enjoyed the distance and acheived decent times for my ability. I also suffered my first DNF (did not finish). During the Vacheray triathlon I managed to suffer a puncture and bad form for me as a cyclist I was carrying nothing with me Ie no inner tube, gas etc just levers. So lesson learnt. Always carry an inner tube, know how to change a tyre and carry gas. All of which I do now.

So due to work I have been unable to compete in my 'A' race. Gutted yes. However silver lining and all, I will now instead go home for Christmas, see my family and celebrate my bestfriends 40th birthday.

I also managed another massive challenge for me......I swam 6km in one hit as part of a challenge which I still have 2 more disciplines to complete (Nov).

I've learnt alot from this year about my sport of triathlon, training, being consistent, about myself as an athlete, listening to advice from loads of different people, and I think now with the experience of this year I will be able to better plan for next season.

Lessons learnt-
* Must train consistently
* Don't try and catch up on sessions that have been missed
* Don't listen to so many people for advice, stick to one
* Do not try and do so many races
* Stick to my race plan and not worry about what other people are doing

My next season so far consists of 1 half marathon (Wokingham), 2 half ironmans (Swashbuckler and Vit) and a relay Ironman - bike leg (Roth, Germany).

Up to the end of the year, I will be focusing on my running, getting lean and strong. 2013 will be a year of quality racing and some PB's.

Till next time
