Line in the sand

This morning as part of my plan, before winter kicks in I needed to get down to my favourite lake in London @SheppertonLake http://www.sheppertonopenwaterswim.co.uk and get my first timed 3.8km swim in the bag.

At Shepperton Lake, sporting my @Huub Westsuit, @Funkita Swimsuit and Shepperton Lake swimcap, Lake Model :)

I had no clear idea of how long it would take but I was hoping with my ability I would be around the 1:40 - 1:45 mark.

Getting to the lake on a Saturday isn't that easy when you don't have a car. Normally I would ride the entire way but I have a half marathon tomorrow morning and didn't really want to cook my legs. So after riding part way and getting the train I made it down to the lake.

The lake was beautiful and calm and as the season is closing here in the UK, it was relatively quiet, bumped into a fellow Turbo and also my friend from Ful-on-Tri. The water was a mere 16 degrees warm which isn't really that bad, considering at the beginning of the season I swim in the lake at 12 degrees.

After getting in and swimming to the first buoy I mentally prepared myself for 4 loops of 750m and 2 loops of 400m. My body was freezing but I just had to get on with it. Press the start button on my Garmin and off I went.

I never know what I think about whilst swimming, I do try to remember technique and when I start to notice that I am not catching the water I focus my attention to my catch.

Anyway without boring you all too much more, I made it all the way around, 3.8km in the bag and I registered a time of 1:34 over 3.6km.....it appeared the 2 x 400m loops are not a true 400m. I short by about 20 mtrs, so if I take that into consideration I probably would have done it 1:36.

Overall I am happy as I had no idea how I would fare over this distance timed, so to come in under 1:40 is a great result for my mental ability. This is just the beginning.

This Sunday I start my fitness sessions with Swim for Tri  (+swimfortri ) and I can't wait. Dan Bullock is the #swimwhisperer of swimming. I look forward to reporting back my swim progress over the upcoming months.

One more thing, for my friends who read my blog and go to Shepperton Lake for their open water #swimming, they have released their own swim caps, check it out below, they are being sold for £5.00. #getonitlikeacarbonnet
